On one of our recent lunch time expeditions, we got into some slight bother over the taking of this photo.

Not the best picture I have ever taken, but I certainly earned it. This is the Student Loans Company building on Bothwell Street.

The building is architecturally fascinating with its long lines and curves (lower down, not in the pic). Sitting proudly on one of the busiest roads in Glasgow city centre, it is a frequent photographic subject. You can barely walk past it without seeing at least one tourist taking a picture with their phone.

However, dare to take a picture with a DSLR and you get a stern word from the security guard in the building. According to the guard, you are not allowed to photograph a government building and she demanded to see the pictures we took. In reality, the rules surrounding taking pictures of government buildings is a grey area, but one that sits on a busy main road? Google seem to get away with it, as do the aforementioned tourists.

I have been taking pictures in public now for many years, and I have yet to be treated this way. We could have stood there for hours arguing with the lady, standing our ground and reciting our rights to her. Instead we decided to show her the pictures, provided her with her little power trip, and parted ways.

For those who do get hassle like this, do NOT let it put you off your hobby. All I can recommend is that you do learn your rights, so that when (not if!) you do get pestered, you don't spend the rest of the day thinking you had done something wrong.
